New Musical Discoveries - Future Clouds and Radar - The Epcot View

Of course, this band evolved out of the ashes of Cotton Mather, so it isn't so surprising that I have branded it with my Beatlesque tag. Guess what part of England they are from. Wrong! They come from Austin Tx.

New Musical Discoveries - Richard Orange & The Eggmen - Beatlesque

I've been asked why I refer to Beatles type tunes as Beatlesque. It probably stems to a large part to this classic but obscure song by Richard Orange called surprise! "Beatlesque". I usually refer to tunes that are inspired by the latter period Beatles era as such. Anyway, please check this instant classic out and tell me if it recalls The Beatles for you.

New Musical Discoveries - Cry Cry Cry & James Keelaghan - Cold Missouri Waters

This is one of those "story" songs I find so truly engaging. Even more astonishing is the fact that it is true.It concerns the tragedy at Mann Gulch in Montana in the summer of '49 where 13 smokejumping firefighters died when the fire got ahead of them. Cry Cry Cry, the folk supergroup formed by Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, and Dar Williams performs the version that got my attention first. Richard sings lead. The story of the fire is also accounted in one of the finest non-fiction books ever: 'Young Men and Fire' by Norman Maclean, he of the delightful semi-autobiographical 'A River Runs Through It' book and movie.

New Musical Discoveries - The Baseball Project - Tony (Boston's Chosen Son)

Here is a soon to be classic story song. At least I think so. This song is just one of the magical moments found on The Baseball Project's latest CD - Vol. 2: High and Inside. It is about the Boston Red Sox star rookie Tony Conigliaro during the sixties. His saga was called "tragic Italian opera" by no less an authority than ESPN. Tony hit a home run in his very first major league game. He became the youngest American League home run champion at age 20 with 32 homers. Tragedy struck on August 18, 1967 when he was walloped by a pitch from the California Angels Jack Hamilton. The pitch broke Tony's cheekbone and temporarily blinded him leading him to miss the 1968 season. He was named Comeback Player of the year after the '69 season. However. lingering vision problems led to his early retirement in '71. The Baseball Project is a supergroup of sorts featuring R.E.M's guitarist on bass, Scott McCaughey on guitar, Steve Wynn on vocals and guitar (he also wrote Tony), and Linda Pitmon on drums.

New Musical Discoveries - The Woodys - Message From Michael

Another wonderful Jingle Jangle song is the delightful "Message From Michael" by The Woodys.
Don't you just love that 12 string electric guitar? Reported to be written about The Byrds drummer Michael Clarke and a public service message of sort.

Here is the original source for this classic tune

Here is a wonderful cover version of this tune performed by the American-Italian band - The Piedmont Brothers Band taking their name from the Piedmont Mountains a mountain range appearing in both countries.

New Musical Discoveries - The Fraternal Order Of All - Space And Time

Most listeners will recall Andrew Gold for his decidedly easy listening tune "Thank You For Being A Friend" or "Lonely Boy".
Not me. I actually love his tune "Space and Time" which he recorded much later under the moniker "The Fraternal Order of All" along with his pal Graham Gouldman of 10cc fame. It came from his tribute album homage to sixties bands. From his stupendous mid-90s CD "Greetings From Planet Love" If there is a better tribute to the style and feel of The Byrds circa "8 Miles High" and the rest of the "5D" album let me know.

New Musical Discoveries - The Lightning Seeds - Tingle Tangle

One of the best-undiscovered jingle jangle gems of a song is  called "Tingle Tangle"
By Liverpool, England's second-best all-time band - The Lightning Seeds. Here are the simple but quite poignant & effective lyrics: "The Tingle as you spin that web of lies, Leads to a tangle that hurts the more you try. Fighting in the bathroom, Holding back the tears can make you blind. Screaming at the new moon, To swallow up the sky. Only time can melt the ice-cream clown, And frozen tears come rolling down... The tingle as you first look in those eyes, Leads to a tangle of paper chains for life. Now, Do you feel the same way too?" This song is by far the most underrated in "The Lightning Seeds' impressive canon.

New Musical Discoveries - Idiot Johnson - Girl On A Train

I have just come across a very curious song performed by the most improbably named Idiot Johnson. The song itself is entitled "Girl On A Train" It has s special looping quality that strongly suggests the slightly halting and swaying rhythmic moving quality of riding a train. I rate this ****. Please play the video to hear this wonderful gem of a song and see a most amusing drawing graphic accompaniment. Also, fortunately, you can obtain the song on ITunes. Does anyone else like this?

If you just want the audio. Courtesy of Bandcamp here is the full EP.
